Guangzhou ranks first, with an excellent assessment grade

Recently, the results of the 2023 Guangdong Provincial Environmental Protection Responsibility and In-depth Assessment of Pollution Prevention and Control were released. After comprehensive evaluation, Guangzhou ranked first among the 21 prefecture-level cities in the province, with an excellent assessment grade. This is also the fifth consecutive year that Guangzhou has been rated as excellent in the provincial environmental protection responsibility and in-depth assessment of pollution prevention and control.

In recent years, Guangzhou has further consolidated the political responsibility of ecological civilization construction and ecological environment protection, continued to promote ecological environment legislation and supervision, held a meeting to promote in-depth pollution prevention and control, and promoted important progress in the pollution prevention and control battle. The average PM2.5 concentration in 2023 was 23 micrograms/cubic meter, which continued to be the best among the nine national central cities. The ratio of days with good air quality (AQI compliance rate) was 90.4%. The water quality of 20 national and provincial test sections met the standards, and the inferior V water body sections remained zero. Liuxi River was selected as the second batch of excellent cases of beautiful rivers and lakes in the country. The night compliance rate of urban sound environment functional areas met the provincial work requirements. The overall soil environmental quality is stable, and the safety of key construction land is effectively guaranteed. Medical waste is 100% safely disposed of. The annual total emission reduction task has been fully completed.

In 2024, the ecological environment quality of Guangzhou will continue to improve. From January to September, the proportion of days with good air quality was 93.1%, an increase of 3.7 percentage points year-on-year, and the number of good days increased by 11 days year-on-year; the average concentration of PM2.5 was 20 micrograms/cubic meter, continuing to maintain the best among the nine national central cities. The water quality of 20 national and provincial test sections fully met the annual assessment requirements, and the proportion of sections with good surface water quality was 95%, 15 percentage points higher than the provincial assessment requirements.
